Recognizing car, bike, train, tram and bus

Besides car trips, MoveJack recognizes bike, train, tram and bus trips. The app decides this once a trip has ended.

How does MoveJack recognize the means of transport?

  • Bike: motion detection mostly reports cycling, and your top speed stays within what fits a bike (up to 50 km/h). The app decides this on your phone, without internet.
  • Tram: most of the route runs along a tram line.
  • Train: at least 60 percent of the checked route points lie along a railroad, or the start and end are at a station.
  • Bus: you stop systematically at stops; at least 70 percent of the stops are at a bus stop, and there are at least four stops.
  • Otherwise it is a car trip.

Bike, train, bus and tram are fixed vehicles in the app. A recognized trip goes to that vehicle.

Which data goes to a map service?

For the train, tram and bus check, the app sends up to six route points or six places where you stood still to Overpass, a public search service for map data, after the trip. For the station check, a start or end point goes to Nominatim. Without a name or account.

If a paired Bluetooth tag from your car was nearby during the whole trip, the app skips these checks.

Without internet the app cannot recognize train, tram and bus. The trip then goes to the selected vehicle, and the app does not try again later.

Not recording a means of transport

You can turn automatic recording off for each means of transport: My vehicles › Other › choose the bike, train, bus or tram › Register automatically. It is on by default. If it is off, the app does not save a trip it assigns to that means of transport.

If the app does not recognize a tram or bus trip as such, that trip goes to the selected vehicle.
