Simplified expenses or actual costs

You can claim a flat rate per business mile instead of working out what the vehicle actually costs to run. Once you use the flat rate for a vehicle, you keep using it for as long as you have that vehicle. Either way, you need to be able to show which journeys were for the business: the date, where you went, why, and the miles.

What MoveJack records for every journey

Nothing to start or stop. The app notices when you set off and arrive, and records:

• the date, and the time you left and arrived
• the start and end address, as an address rather than coordinates
• the miles driven, measured by GPS
• the vehicle, if you use more than one
• business, personal or commute; with your home and work address saved, the app fills that in itself
• a note per journey, such as the client or the job

Ready for Self Assessment

Filter by period and type of journey and export to Excel or PDF, with the date, addresses, miles, type and odometer reading for each journey. Keep self-employed records for at least five years after the January filing deadline; a yearly export covers that. Examples on reports. Working on site at clients? Employed and claiming mileage?

If your employer pays less than the approved rate, you can claim Mileage Allowance Relief on the difference, and the same log is your record of business miles. How that works is in the mileage allowance guide.

Your journeys stay on your phone

Your trip history is on your own phone. MoveJack keeps no central copy of your journeys, and you do not need an account. Your journeys leave the device only when you export or share a report. For single features, such as turning a location into an address, the app sends one coordinate to a map service; your trip history does not go with it. How that works is on privacy.

What it costs

The first 3 days are free, with every feature. After that you choose a monthly, six-month or annual plan. You pay through the App Store or Google Play and cancel there too. All plans are on pricing.
