Journeys and recording
Location and GPS
MoveJack uses your phone’s location to record journeys and visits. The app keeps that location data on your phone.
What does the app record?
During a journey the app saves, for each location point, the time, the position, the altitude, the speed, the direction of travel, the accuracy of the measurement and the speed limit at that point.
How close together those points are is set by the distance filter: 10, 25 or 50 metres, 10 by default. The app records a new point once you have covered at least that distance. See battery, distance filter and office hours.
Even outside a journey
If Automatic tracking is on, the location engine stays active in the background to recognise the start of a journey.
On Android, the app requests a position every three minutes while you are stationary, so as not to miss the start of a journey. On iPhone the app does not do this.
Where does the location data stay?
The GPS points of your journeys are in the app’s database on your phone. The location engine also keeps points that have not yet been processed into a journey for up to seven days, and keeps its own log of three days, also on your phone.
Your full journey history is never uploaded, and MoveJack keeps no central copy of it.
When does a position go to an external service?
A few features need a map service. A position from your phone then goes to that service, without a name or account. Together, though, those requests show your route.
- For the speed limit: a position at most once every 8 seconds, even outside a journey.
- For the start and end address: the start and end point after the journey.
- For the train, tram and bus check: a few route points after the journey.
- On the map: the map tiles of the area you are looking at.
The full overview is in external services and what leaves your phone.
Which permission is needed?
For automatic journeys the app needs the location permission Always (on Android: Allow all the time), with precise location. Without location permission, recording does not start.
