Trips and recording
Business, private and commute
Every trip gets a category: business, private or commute, and in one case train. The app decides it on your phone, and one tap changes it.
How does MoveJack decide the category?
The app checks in this order:
- If both the start and the end are at an address you saved as Train station, it is a train trip.
- If the trip goes from your home address to your work address, or the other way round, it is commute.
- If your office hours are on, a trip that starts within those hours is business, and outside them private.
- Otherwise the default applies: business, or private if you have turned on Trips private by default.
The app looks up which address belongs to the start or end among your own addresses on the phone, without internet.
If you have not set office hours and have not turned on Trips private by default, every trip that is not a commute or train trip is business, including evenings and weekends.
Setting office hours
Under Settings › Trips & office hours you turn on Trips default business/private and choose the days and times. That switch is off by default; the suggested hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The rule is fixed: business within office hours, private outside them; it cannot be reversed. Commute and train trips take precedence. A window across midnight is not possible.
In the same place is the switch App is off outside these times. With it, the app does not start trips by itself outside your office hours; you can still start a trip yourself with Start trip. See battery, distance filter and office hours.
Commute and train
The app recognizes commuting once you have saved your home and work address. See addresses.
A train trip does not count toward your business, private or commute mileage. Separately, the app recognizes whether you traveled by train: that sets the vehicle, not the category. See recognizing the means of transport.
Changing a category
- In the trip list: tap the trip’s label. It cycles from private to business to commute.
- In the trip details: choose Private, Business or Commute.
- In the Trip added notification: with the Change to private button, or Change to business for a private trip, without opening the app.
