Distance, mileage and odometer

MoveJack calculates the distance of a journey from your phone’s GPS points. It is not a reading of your car’s odometer.

How does MoveJack measure the distance?

For an automatic journey or one you started yourself, the distance is the difference in the location engine’s odometer between the first and the last point. When completing a journey, the app adds the stretch from your previous parking spot to the first point, if that is no more than 2 kilometres.

For journeys the app builds afterwards and for the parts of a split journey, the distance is the sum of the straight lines between the points. For a journey you add yourself, you enter the distance yourself.

The app does not calculate a route along the road, and never reads a car’s odometer: there is no connection with the car.

What is the odometer reading in the app?

  • For a vehicle: the reading you enter, to which the app adds the distance after each automatically completed journey.
  • In a report: the Km-stand column (odometer reading) is the reading of the app’s GPS counter, not your car’s odometer.

You read your car’s actual odometer reading yourself, and note it down where needed.

Journey time

The duration of a journey runs from the start to the moment you arrive. In the Excel report it is given in minutes.

Kilometres or miles

In the wizard and in the settings you choose whether the app uses kilometres or miles.

On a phone with its region set to the UK or the US, the wizard suggests miles.
