MoveJack and HMRC

MoveJack records your journeys and turns them into reports. Whether your mileage records are complete is for HMRC to judge; MoveJack makes no statement about that.

What does MoveJack record for each journey?

The date, the start and end time, the start and end address, the distance based on GPS, the category, the vehicle and a comment if you add one.

What do you add yourself?

  • Your car’s actual odometer reading: you read it yourself and note it down where that is required. The app counts GPS mileage.
  • The purpose of a journey, as a comment on the journey.

MoveJack keeps no history of changes to a journey: the app only stores the current state.

Keeping track of private kilometres

The app can count your private kilometres per calendar year, against a limit that is set to 500 km by default and that you set yourself. At 80 and 100 per cent you get a notification.

You turn it on under Settings › Private-use limit, or with the Private this year tile on the home screen. It is off by default, and it counts for one vehicle that you choose. Journeys without a vehicle do not count.

The app works out the count and the notification when the Private this year tile on the home screen loads.

The mileage rate

In the UK, the approved mileage rate is 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles of the tax year and 25p a mile beyond that, according to GOV.UK.

In the app you set your own rate. See claiming.

What MoveJack does not do

MoveJack does not say that HMRC accepts your records. Check for yourself that your records are complete.
