Backup and new phone

You create a backup file of your journeys yourself and restore it on a new phone. You decide where that file is kept.

What does MoveJack do?

In the app you create a backup file of all your journeys, vehicles, addresses and settings yourself. On a new phone you restore that file.

You find it under Menu › My data › Backup. A backup is only made when you choose to make one: the app makes no automatic backup and does not send the file to a MoveJack server.

My data is also behind the subscription screen: you can create or restore a backup as long as your subscription or free trial is running. See subscription.

What is in the file?

The file is called MoveJack-backup-YYYY-MM-DD.json. It contains your journeys, vehicles, addresses and settings, and also your profile: your first name and, if you entered it, your email address.

The backup file is not encrypted. Anyone who has the file can read it. So keep it somewhere you trust.

Where is the file?

  • On iPhone the file is in the app’s own folder, and that folder is not included in the iCloud backup. You get it out with the Email button, for example by sending it to yourself or putting it in your own cloud.
  • On Android the file is in your phone’s Documents folder. You can email it from there too.

You cannot delete a backup file in the app: My reports only shows reports. On iPhone the file disappears when you delete the app. On Android it stays in the Documents folder, even after you have deleted the app. More about that in wiping and deleting data.

Restoring on a new phone

To restore, you choose the backup file. The app checks it and, after your confirmation, replaces the data in the app at that moment with the data from the file.

Why are your journeys not in the iCloud or Google backup?

Your journeys are not included in your phone’s automatic backup. On iPhone, the app marks its folders as “not in the backup” every time it starts. On Android, the app excludes all its data from the cloud backup and from transfer to a new device.

So a new phone does not start with your journeys by itself. That is what your own backup file is for.

What if you lose your phone?

If you have no backup file of your own, your journeys cannot be recovered. MoveJack keeps no central copy of your journey history, and your journeys are not in the iCloud or Google backup.

Reports you exported earlier stay wherever you kept them. An export is for your records: you cannot put it back into the app. See exporting and sharing.
